Web 2.0 workshop now on itinerary -- July 1 2007

I have received confirmation of my registration for a workshop "Web 2.0: building on the basics " to be held in London on October 30th 2008. This course is organised by CILIP (Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals) and will "examine Web 2.0 applications in a practical manner, allowing participants to explore ways in which shared search techniques, social bookmarking, saved data, wikis and other applications not only promote the information centre, but provide a richness and depth of information to their users that has not been possible until now. "

Experiment with wireless network - State Lib. Vic.

On Friday 27th of June I took the opportunity to experience the wireless network facilities at the State Library of Victoria. To connect to the wireless network with your own lap top you must be a registered library user and your computer must have a standard wireless card with 802.11b or 802.11g capabilities. The first barrier I encountered was the security guard who said my back pack and lap top bag could not be taken into the library. He directed me to the locker room. The next challenge was to negotiate the "smart locker" system which involved inserting a $1 coin to open a locker and get a "secret code". Before I had time to extract my laptop and put the bag in, the door locked and had to be re-opened. Whilst this is possible, I discovered it can only be done when using the same machine that the ticket was issued from (there are several ticket machines). Eventually I was able to enter the library and gain instructions from the reference desk on connecting to the network. Essentially, computers can find the network from anywhere in the library, and there are various desks, carrels etc. that have power outlets. Opening a web browser and typing in any URL will bring up the Library Wireless Network login page. The user name is is the barcode number from your library card and the password is your family name.I found that the login page did not come up and had to disable the Windows firewall client on my computer (in Control Panel. Security). The librarian had advised of this potentiality. The wireless service provides web access but not full Internet access. There are restrictions on certain sites and file types. I found I was not able to access this blog, or to update my anti-viral software. To print material, files must be saved to a removable storage device and taken to one of the library's public-access computers. The library provided a leaflet on wireless access which detailed the service, conditions and possible problems.
